Education

Education is central to our capacity to grow as disciples of Jesus and to live out our Baptismal Covenants. At Church of the Epiphany, we believe very strongly that our whole lives are spent growing in the knowledge and love of God, and that our work forming ourselves as Christians is never done.

Our primary Christian Education time takes place on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. We offer Christian formation classes most Sundays from September to June for all ages.

A nursery staffed with volunteer members of the congregation is available for our youngest members during the Education Hour.

From age three to fourth grade, we offer a program called Godly Play. Godly Play is grounded in the idea that children already have a relationship with God, and that our task is to nurture this existing relationship. The program is story-based, with strong influence from the Montessori movement.

For children from fifth grade through six or seventh grade, we offer a new program called Sojourners. The Sojourners program provides a space for children to reflect on their encounter with God in scripture and their lives, and uses the Spark lectionary curriculum.

Following Sojourners, young people enter our Journey to Adulthood program. It begins with Rite 13; youth gradually move to the second level, Journey to Adulthood (J2A), and finally into Young Adults in Church (YAC).

Adult Education also takes place on Sunday mornings, and is usually facilitated by a member of the clergy. Adult Education classes typically engage a variety of faith-related topics, some inspiring, some challenging, and all aimed at helping us to deepen our faith.

We currently host several bible studies, including one that meets on Sundays at 9:15.

From time to time, we also host Wednesday evening programs. These include worship, supper, small groups, and an educational program for children and adults.

Although Epiphany benefits from a strong Christian Education program, we believe that the most important Christian Education actually takes place outside of Sunday morning: as people find ways to recognize and love God in their daily lives — in the joys and challenges of family life, in the workplace, in regular prayer and study of scripture. The programs we offer at church seek to equip every member of the church to grow daily in the knowledge and love of God.
