Dear
friend,

"The mischief of orthodoxy, mistaking itself for truth will be the most mischievous in all
Christianity". These are words said by the great 19th century preacher Phillips Brooks to a group of
his fellow clergy in Boston. Brooks, who went on to become Episcopal bishop of Massachusetts,
was expressing his concern about a tendency he observed among religious leaders to preach about
what was right at the expense of missing the truth.
Of course, Jesus also noticed this tendency about the religious leaders of his day. In this Sunday's
Gospel, the leader of a synagogue berates Jesus because he has healed a woman on the Sabbath. A
woman who has suffered terribly at the hands of a crippling physical disability. There are plenty of
other times to heal people, the leader points out, but no work is to be done on the Sabbath.
Technically, he's right. The Law did say that any work on the Sabbath was unlawful. But Jesus
quickly calls the man on his hypocrisy: "Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his
donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of
Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath
day?"
Jesus told his followers that it was the truth-not right belief-that would ultimately set them free.
Put another way, being a follower of Jesus isn't just about believing in the right thing or following
the rules perfectly. If it were, I suspect that we, like the religious leader in the Gospel, would
probably always find ourselves coming up short. This isn't to say that right belief isn't important to
our faith. As Christians, our belief in the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus that we profess each
Sunday in the Creed is at the heart of our life together. But our belief in doctrines like these can't be
true, nor can it set us free, unless we are committed to living it in our lives.

Ever considered becoming a Godly Play teacher in our Sunday school program?
Godly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum, with a
multi-sensory approach to telling Bible stories using
three-dimensional materials. The goal of Godly Play is to
help children aged 3-11 to know God and find direction
in their lives while they are still young. A free Godly
Play training will take place at Church of the Epiphany
on Saturday, September 18 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Please
prayerfully consider whether the Spirit might be leading
you to offer your time and talent to this important ministry
in our church. For more information, or to RSVP for
