Dear
friend,

I've been thinking a lot about family this week. Perhaps because my own family recently visited me
here in Providence. And perhaps because I've been listening carefully to a debate about family that
has been taking place all over our nation in the wake of Proposition 8 in California. As you may
have heard, Prop 8 - which made it illegal for gay and lesbian people to marry in California - was
struck down as unconstitutional by a federal judge last week. Almost immediately, proponents of
Prop 8 began protesting the decision.
Christians who oppose gay marriage often make the case that allowing same-sex couples to wed will
"radically redefine" family in such a way that is at odds with our Judeo-Christian heritage. But they
neglect to mention an important point, one that is hinted at in our Gospel this week: namely, that
Jesus himself radically redefined the family in such a way that was at odds with his own Jewish
heritage. Jesus spoke of the "family" not as a group of people bound together by blood or marriage,
but as community of people who were singularly committed to the vision of compassion, liberation,
and equality outlined in the Gospels. This was - and is - what it means to be part of the family of
God.
In these dog days of August before the new school year begins, Jesus is inviting you and me to "radically
redefine" the family by committing ourselves anew to being members of the family of God. There
will be plenty of opportunities for you to do so at Church of the Epiphany in the weeks to come-
teaching Godly Play, visiting sick parishioners, volunteering at the Bread of Life Food Pantry, giving
generously of your own resources to those who have few, to name only a handful! These are the
"family values" that we are called to practice together in the family of God.
Edmund

How We Make Room Join us, this Sunday, for the third in a four part series about the role of hospitality in our life together, led by Edmund Harris. These conversations will begin at 9:15 a.m. and will meet in the multi-purpose room.
August 15 - "The Household of God: Hospitality and the Church" - What has been the role of hospitality in the Church? Who has offered it? And to whom have they offered it? This week, we'll look at what hospitality has meant for the Church over the centuries.
August 22 - "Hospitality and Church of the Epiphany" - What about hospitality right here in our own community? How are we hospitable to the outsiders in our midst? How might we be even more hospitable? Come share your own experiences of hospitality, both from Church and from your own lives.
