Not By Bread Alone Retreat
Join Edmund for a bread-baking retreat, Saturday, August 7 from 9 - Noon in the church kitchen. We will bake bread for the Eucharist as well as share a time of prayer and fellowship. This is an opportunity to learn to bake bread. All ages, genders and baking abilities are most welcome.
Equal Exchange, Fair Trade Coffee

Through our Outreach Commission we offer Fair Trade Coffee for sale as a ministry. Purchasing it supports farmers in earning a fair wage for their work as well as promoting sustainable agriculture. We buy direct from the co-op and there is no "profit" to our church. The coffee is excellent and tastes even better knowing that it is ethically grown and marketed. Coffee will be offered for sale during the coffee hour following both services this Sunday. We will have both regular ($6 per bag) and decaf coffee ($7) available. Contact Kathy Ivey at 401-270-0534 or kivey47{at}hotmail{dot}com.

Dear
friend,

I'm happily back from my vacation and as I make the transition back to ministry at church I am grateful for first words of the Gospel this week. Jesus says to his disciples, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." These words are a good reminder of God's unconditional love and provision for us. This week's Gospel continues the theme we heard last week about being rich toward God. We are given what we need to be rich toward God, because God is rich toward us first. God is there for us as an unconditional loving presence who meets our needs and in whose presence we need not fear.
Sometimes we can forget how much fear we carry around with us. If we don't feel it ourselves we are certainly surrounded by it. In the past few weeks I intentionally watched more T.V. than usual. I wanted to know what is going on in pop culture, the news, and in the advertising world. I was surprised to remember how fear based our media is. According to my television, there are many things to fear. Primarily we should be afraid of the ongoing economic crisis. Other common fears seem to be aging, weight gain, fitness, family relationship dysfunction, time management, and the destruction of our environment. Those are the general fears, but then we are also invited by the media to entertain our own particular, personal demons.
Fear is a normal natural part of being human. Jesus was aware of the fear of the disciples. Our culture counts on this human emotion, especially when trying to sell us something. The Good News this week is an opportunity for us to consider our own particular fears. As Christians, we can live with our fears and then move beyond them, or at least hold them more lightly. Jesus reminds us that God takes pleasure in meeting our needs and providing for us. God provides well beyond our basic necessities; God provides the Kingdom! Jesus goes on to offer an image of a loving master who puts on an apron and serves his slaves at the table. Imagine that.
As you prepare for worship this week, perhaps you will allow yourself some time in prayer and reflection to consider your own fears. Then ponder the image of God sitting you down at the table and offering you a meal. Right in the midst of your anxiety, God will give you what you need, and so much more.
See you at the table.
Jennifer

How We Make Room Join us, this Sunday, for the second in a four part series about the role of hospitality in our life together, led by Edmund Harris. These conversations will begin at 9:15 a.m. and will meet in the multi-purpose room.
August 8 - "The Least of These: Jesus and Hospitality" - What's distinctive about Christian hospitality? We'll look at what Jesus said about hospitality to his followers, and how he embodied it himself.
August 15 - "The Household of God: Hospitality and the Church" - What has been the role of hospitality in the Church? Who has offered it? And to whom have they offered it? This week, we'll look at what hospitality has meant for the Church over the centuries.
August 22 - "Hospitality and Church of the Epiphany" - What about hospitality right here in our own community? How are we hospitable to the outsiders in our midst? How might we be even more hospitable? Come share your own experiences of hospitality, both from Church and from your own lives.

| Wanted: Godly Play Teachers! |
| |
Ever considered becoming a Godly Play teacher in our Sunday school program?
Godly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum, with a multi-sensory approach to telling Bible stories
using three-dimensional materials. The goal of Godly Play is to help children aged 3-11 to know
God and find direction in their lives while they are still young.
The Godly Play classroom is a place for children to be themselves; to come closer to the mystery of
God's presence; to learn the language of Christian people; to form community, and to take care of
one another. Sacred stories, symbols, and liturgical actions are invitations to enter into the work of
discovering.
A free Godly Play training will take place at Church of the Epiphany on Saturday, September 18
from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Please prayerfully consider whether the Spirit might be leading you to offer your time and talent to
this important ministry in our church.
For more information, or to RSVP for the training, contact Edmund at 401-434-5012 ext. #14 or edmund{at}epiphany{dot}org.
