What in God's name are we singing?
music stanza

St. Augustine of Hippo is quoted as saying, "To sing is to pray twice." Music plays a huge role in our worship for good reason. Join Nat Taylor for two weeks of exploring our liturgical music and hymnody. This interactive, musical forum will be part history, part conversation, part singing, and totally fun for all ages. Join us at 9:15 a.m. this Sunday and next, July 18 & 25.

Summer Education Offering

How We Make Room
A summer conversation about the role of hospitality in our life together, led by Edmund Harris. Join us at 9:15 on Sunday mornings, August 1-22

August 1 - "Entertaining Strangers Unaware: Hospitality in the Old Testament" - What role did hospitality play for the people of God in Israel? We'll begin by retelling some of the oldest stories about hospitality.

August 8 - "The Least of These: Jesus and Hospitality" - What's distinctive about Christian hospitality? We'll look at what Jesus said about hospitality to his followers, and how he embodied it himself.

August 15 - "The Household of God: Hospitality and the Church" - What has been the role of hospitality in the Church? Who has offered it? And to whom have they offered it? This week, we'll look at what hospitality has meant for the Church over the centuries.

August 22 - "Hospitality and Church of the Epiphany" - What about hospitality right here in our own community? How are we hospitable to the outsiders in our midst? How might we be even more hospitable? Come share your own experiences of hospitality, both from Church and from your own lives.

Dear Friend,

During my last semester of seminary, I took a class on Christian art. We spent the whole semester looking at sculptures and paintings based on stories from the Bible, including Velasquez's" Christ in the House of Martha and Mary," inspired by this Sunday's Gospel from St. Luke (see above). On the right-hand corner of the painting, you can see an image of Jesus' visit to the home of Martha and Mary. You remember the scene: while Mary sits at the feet of Jesus, Martha is "distracted by her many tasks." "Lord," she asks bitterly, "do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me."

In the foreground on the left side, another woman with a mortar and pestle in hand is busy preparing a meal. Judging from the redness of her cheeks and scowl on her face, she is not exactly carrying out her task with joy! Meanwhile, the older and wiser woman next to her gestures toward the scene from the Gospel, as if to gently remind her of Jesus' words to Martha: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

I confess that this story has always gotten under my skin-perhaps because it's more like holding a mirror up to my own work ethic than I like to acknowledge! I mean for goodness sake, someone has to make dinner! Someone has to clean the house! Someone has to walk the dog! And sometimes, when no one offers to help, I just have to take matters into my own hands. It might not be pleasant, but that's life. Sound familiar?

If we're honest, I suspect we can all recognize our own tendency to let our work overshadow our relationships with God and one another. As followers of Jesus, though, you and I have been invited to "choose the better part." Simply put, this means carving out time in the midst of our busy lives for being present to God and to those we love. This might mean starting each day by sitting in silence for ten minutes. It might mean saying Morning or Evening Prayer regularly. Or reading the Bible. It might mean sitting down to dinner with family for a change. Or taking a walk in the neighborhood with our spouse or a friend. Whatever it means for you, I invite you to take advantage of the relaxed pace of summertime, and to practice being more fully present to all that fills your life.

Edmund

  • Wanted: Godly Play Teachers!
  • Godly Play teacher

Ever considered becoming a Godly Play teacher in our Sunday school program?
Godly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum, with a multi-sensory approach to telling Bible stories using three-dimensional materials. The goal of Godly Play is to help children aged 3-11 to know God and find direction in their lives while they are still young. The Godly Play classroom is a place for children to be themselves; to come closer to the mystery of God's presence; to learn the language of Christian people; to form community, and to take care of one another. Sacred stories, symbols, and liturgical actions are invitations to enter into the work of discovering.
A free Godly Play training will take place at Church of the Epiphany on Saturday, September 18 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Please prayerfully consider whether the Spirit might be leading you to offer your time and talent to this important ministry in our church.
For more information, or to RSVP for the training, contact Edmund at 401-434-5012 ext. #14 or edmund{at}epiphany{dot}org.
