Stanley Street Treatment & Resources:
Those battling HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and/or addiction need your assistance in securing personal items to help them maintain personal hygiene and self esteem as they start to rebuild their lives. Shirley Friend (401-835-3466 or amigosmf{at}cox{dot}net) will collect shaving cream, soap, deodorant, disposable razors, toothpaste and travel size shampoos and conditioners. A collection box for these items has been placed in the Parish Hall.

Dear friend,

This week has been a hot one and there is no mistaking that it is summer. I hope each of us will have the opportunity to slow down, to rest, and to play in these weeks of warmth. This week we hear the Good News of the Good Samaritan, a story so familiar it risks becoming a cliche. As I've been pondering this parable this week I've also been thinking about vacation, which for me begins next week. After telling the parable Jesus asks the lawyer, "Which one of these...was the neighbor?" and the lawyer's responds, "The one who showed him mercy." This week we have the opportunity to think about the ways we show mercy and how we become people who have the capacity for acting as neighbors. We can not assume that this behavior is natural, even for those of us who follow Jesus Christ. I think one of the ways in which we become more loving, merciful neighbors is by building in time for rest, reflection and prayer so that we may have the graciousness to act when called upon. In our worship this week we will have the opportunity to reflect on this and here is a poem that may offer some encouragement. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday. Between now and then take some time to play!
Jennifer

Let Me Live Grace-fully
                            By Ted Loder
Thank you, Lord,
for this season
     of sun and slow motion,
         of games and porch sitting,
of picnics and light green fireflies
                  on heavy purple evenings;
and praise for slight breezes.
It's good, God,
as the first long days of your creation.

Let this season be for me
a time of gathering together the pieces
into which my busyness has broken me.
O God, enable me now
     to grow wise through reflection,
peaceful through the song of the cricket,
recreated through the laughter of play.

Most of all, Lord,
let me live easily and grace-fully for a spell
so that I may see other souls deeply,
        share in a silence unhurried,
listen to the sound of sunlight and shadows,
explore barefoot the land of forgotten dreams and shy hopes,
and find the right words to tell another who I am.
