Dear Friend,

I've been thinking and reading about mission this week, and came across these words by the South African theologian David Bosch:
Our mission has no life of its own: only in the hands of the sending God can it truly be called mission. Not least since the missionary initiative comes from God alone--- There is church because there is mission, not vice versa. To participate in mission is to participate in the movement of God's love toward people, since God is a fountain of sending love.

Bosch's point is a simple one, but one that's easy for Christians to forget. As the people who make up the Church, we don't have a mission all by ourselves. Only God has a mission, and God has graciously invited us to join in this mission. So what does it look like for us to participate in God's mission?

This Sunday, as we celebrate our nation's independence, we'll also hear one of the great stories about mission in the Gospels, Jesus' sending of the seventy elders. You may remember that Jesus sent them ahead of him to prepare the way for him. Curiously, though, he tells them not to carry a bag, or extra sandals, or food and water, and instead to be completely dependent on the hospitality of strangers. It seems that God's mission is fulfilled not by clinging to power or self-sufficiency, but through vulnerability and a willingness to be dependent on others-even strangers! So much for what my Scoutmaster once taught me about being prepared!

This week's Gospel offers you and me a timely glimpse of God's mission, and also an invitation to participate in it ourselves. I look forward to joining you as we commit ourselves to God's mission anew, and to sending God's love to those who need it most.

Edmund
