Dear friend,

Our mission statement begins this way, "We welcome all---" That may sound fairly innocuous. It is so very ordinary for a church to say they are welcoming. The way we are called to embody and enliven that part of our mission is, however, extraordinary. At Epiphany we try to practice, on a moment to moment basis, the Christian act of offering radical hospitality. We attempt to welcome ALL people to participate with us in what God is doing in our midst. It sounds great, very nice of us, but the reality is that it is not easy and it's not really about us. Part of the challenge is that we make ourselves vulnerable when we open up our community and our selves to "others" particularly when they are different from us. They challenge us; they change us. In our church we have a particular gift or charism, for being a place of welcome, but we don't do this on our own or because it is the polite thing to do. We do it, because Jesus did, and we are trying to live as his body in the world and the church we have been given.

The Gospel we will encounter in this week's Eucharist is a wonderful story with interesting characters, including Jesus who is both a guest and a host. There is a sinful, loving woman, who knows her need of Jesus and the freedom of forgiveness. There is a Pharisee, who likes order and boundaries. There is something to be learned about the radical, shocking, tender love of God who forgives and calls us ALL to the feast. Jesus makes clear in this passage and those that surround it in the Gospel of Luke, that sinners are especially welcome at the table and in the kingdom. This means you. This means me. This means everyone.

What does it look like when we authentically and truly welcome all? Who may show up? Where do we draw the line? Who is worthy? How will they fit in? How will we? What happens next? I guess you'll just have to come to the table to find out.

Jennifer

Edmund's first Sunday at Epiphany will be June 20. Be sure to welcome him and his partner, Michael to Epiphany. We encourage everyone to wear their nametags that day, and every Sunday, as this will help Edmund and Michael and all others, who are new to the church, get to know us much easier.
