Dear friend,

Acts 2 tells a marvelous story: the gift of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrate today. It is "Jesus' own first gift" to them; the start of their new life as apostles - people on a mission.

Some people in Jerusalem, observing the way Jesus' followers were acting, said they must have gotten into the new wine. Peter charmingly reassured them: "...it's only nine o'clock in the morning, so we can't be drunk." What happened that Pentecost morning defies simple analysis. What it created and sustained, we can understand. Its power, like wind and fire, can still be in our midst. The gift of the Holy Spirit created HOPE; a lively trust, a way to live that moved from the apostles to others, and then on and on. It still is experienced.

I have seen it in this parish: in people's faces, in their actions; in the way you make this faith community so warm and fresh. All together, because of the Spirit, we share lively hope. We are not afraid to go ahead, or even to fail. We are not naive optimists, or passive fatalists. We have been touched by the Spirit, Jesus' gift. So we walk together into our tomorrows; strengthened, energized, and made glad by that gift. It can still be nine o'clock in the morning. May you be touched by God's wind and fire.
