Dear
friend,

The Ascension of Christ,
Salvador Dali, 1958
St. Luke tells us that on the fortieth day of the
Resurrection, Jesus left his disciples and "ascended
into heaven." What is this about; we affirm it every
time we recite either creed? It is hard for us to grasp;
but it is real.
The best picture for me is in the
ceiling of
Yorkminster Cathedral in England. In that ceiling are
symbols of the great episodes in our Lord's life. For
the Ascension, look up and we see, in gold, the soles
of two bare feet. Playful, yet wonderful, too. The reality
is that Jesus, crucified and risen, worked with his
disciples for a time, and then returned to the
immediate presence of the Father.
We aren't
talking
about a space trip. We are entering into a divine
mystery of relationship. The ascended Jesus is not
bound by space or time. The reality of his love is
available at any time, in any place, to any person. Just
as crucial, as Jesus' days on earth brought God's
presence into human life, so his return to the Father
means that you and I, through Jesus, can have our
humanity brought into heaven. Jesus' victory defines
our destiny: to be at home with God for eternity.
This
Sunday we sing a great hymn(215) which, using the
traditional metaphors, sings it so well:
Thou
hast raised our human nature on the clouds to God's
right hand: there we sit in heavenly places, there with
thee in glory stand. Jesus reigns, adored by angels;
Man with God is on the throne; mighty Lord, in thine
ascension, we by faith behold our own.
Christopher Wordsworth, 1807-85; Bishop of
Lincoln.
Easter blessings,
Ned Gammons

Equal Exchange, Fair Trade Coffee

Through our Outreach Commission we offer Fair
Trade Coffee for sale as a ministry. Purchasing it
supports
farmers in earning a fair wage for their work as well as
promoting sustainable agriculture. We buy direct from
the co-op and there is no "profit" to our church. The
coffee is excellent and tastes even better knowing that
it is ethically grown and marketed. Coffee will be
offered for sale during the coffee hour following both
services next Sunday, May 16. We will have both
regular ($5.65 per bag) and decaf coffee ($6.65)
available. Contact Kathy Ivey at 401-270-0534 or

Opening the Prayer Book

We as Anglicans understand that..."the way we pray
(together or individually) shapes the way we believe
and act." Along with the Bible and the Hymnal, the
Book of Common Prayer defines our beliefs, tradition,
and mission. Join Jennifer and Ned on all Sundays in
May at 9:15 a.m. for this Adult Forum series that
explores the Book of Common Prayer.

Dinner & a Movie Night

"If you were to meet ten average Americans on the
street, nine of them would say they believe in God. So
why is the Gospel of Love dividing America?" Come
join us, Friday, May 21 as we view "Lord, Save Us
From Your Followers" and take a closer look at what's
dividing our country, believers and non-believers alike,
and how we can begin to bridge those gaps. Dinner
starts at 6 p.m. Please bring a dish to pass. The
movie will begin at 7 p.m. with a discussion to follow.
Childcare will be provided.
