Dear friend,

Every year, we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter as "Jesus, the Good Shepherd". Most of us respond to that theme. But why? Shepherds and flocks of sheep have not been a big part of American life over the centuries, except in romantic paintings or childrens' books. As college seniors near graduation, and enter the job market, how many will look forward to a life of work in the sheepfold? Yet we call Jesus our Good Shepherd; our hope lies in that relationship. The 23rd Psalm, which many of us memorized as children, is the psalm most called for in the burial service. Our Lord not only described himself as the Good Shepherd he lived that description in perfection.

We do well to reflect on this. We might not like to be classed as a flock of sheep. (Sheep are not praised as very smart.) But we DO need a shepherd; so did the early Christians. Their courage, enthusiasm, and their power to change the Roman world came less from their cleverness than in their absolute confidence that the Risen Jesus was with them as the Good Shepherd. Aren't we in the same boat, er, sheepfold? We trust a living Lord who knows our deepest needs, calms our fears, lifts us up when we fall. He takes us by the hand through the Valley of the shadow of Death. He is our hope and confidence. Just as important, Jesus shows who WE can be: shepherds, one to another. To BE CHURCH, it is not enough to support good causes. When we are church, we dare to be shepherds, one to another. Easter blessings,

Ned
