Dear friend,

This week our weather has taken a wonderful turn from dark and rainy to bright and clear. There is a sense of more light as our clocks have shifted and we have more sun at the end of our days. On our journey through Lent, there is another shift or rather a deepening taking place. This Sunday and the coming week is the last one before Holy Week begins. In the Simple Challenge we have taken on in community, we are calling this week "The Last Frontier." It is the last week of de-cluttering before we enter into that sacred space and time where we simply worship, pray, dine, walk and sit together with Jesus Christ. Holy Week will be a time of offering and awareness. We offer our time, hearts, minds, bodies and souls. We will become aware of God's abundant, extravagant love for us and for the whole creation as Jesus Christ's own offering sinks in and takes new root in our lives.

It will not be a simple or easy journey. The gospel for this week points toward the costliness to and the vulnerability of those who love Jesus. The Good News this week is a vivid portrait of Mary, a beloved friend of Jesus, anointing his feet with a pound of costly perfume and then wiping it with her hair. When we pause with this image there is a tenderness and intimacy to this scene that borders on uncomfortable. It speaks volumes of the love she has for Jesus. We become painfully aware that Jesus is preparing for his own death as he refers to his burial and tells those at the meal that they will "not always have me."

How then shall we prepare for the days ahead? One clue may be found when we think about how we would prepare for the death of a loved one. What are the things that remain unaddressed in the relationship? What needs to be said? How do we love someone as we prepare for their death? There may be some spiritual de-cluttering to do in addition to whatever material preparations you feel called to make. One thing is fairly certain for me, and that is that our time together in worship will be rich and transformative. I look forward to worshiping with you this week and in the weeks to come.

Faithfully,
Jennifer

  • The Simple Challenge Lent 5: March 21-27, "The Last Frontier"
  • Over the course of Lent, we are cleaning out and de- cluttering our material possessions as a spiritual discipline. This week we are invited to take on a last repository of our stuff, some place where you put things that you may not need very frequently or maybe things that you do not need at all. This may be your garage, attic, storage shed, basement or even a rented storage unit. Consider the idea that perhaps the most important "frontier" for your work this week isn't your material clutter, but your spiritual clutter or neglect. This is a week for looking back over this discipline of de-cluttering. What have you experienced? Learned? How have you struggled? Changed?

There are a couple of other options that may be more useful in your spiritual journey toward Holy Week and Easter and you may want to consider these instead of tackling one of the areas above. Here are the options:

    • · You might like to re-visit one of the previous areas of de-cluttering to finish it up or to figure out why it posed difficulty. Sometimes our clutter on the outside has something to teach us about clutter on our inside. Perhaps there is some unfinished relationship, some memories or some attachments that need some attention and release.
    • · Take a prayerful, slow, mental tour of your home. Is there a place that you particularly don't want to tend? Why is that? Is there a way that you might sit in that place with Jesus to learn something new about yourself? Having Jesus next to you or being aware of God's presence with you can help you to remember you are loved just as you are, clutter and all.
    • · You may have found this whole de- cluttering as a spiritual discipline to be a ridiculous idea, really a bunch of hooey. Or maybe you thought it was a good idea, wanted to try it, but didn't get to it or very far into it. Now is the time to relax about that and simply notice that this was your journey. Reflect on this experience, noticing any feelings, insights or new ideas that come up. Is there anything you would like offer in prayer?
Come up with a strategy for your de-cluttering so that you experience gratitude for what you have and keep AND experience generosity in giving away what you can. Think about a strategy for spiritual de-cluttering so that you may experience gratitude for who you are and generosity of spirit in offering yourself in whatever ways make sense to you. Thank God for you and the life you are called to!

This week's offerings for the "Great Give Away" may be labeled and set aside until the week of April 11 - 16 when they may be brought to church. We will be having a Simple Challenge Celebration on the evening of April 16 and the Great Give Away is on Saturday April 17.

If you have broken or outdated electronics, you can recycle them. Look on the website for Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation at www.rirrc.org.

For your reflection and prayer this week:
As they go through the desolate valley, they shall find it a place of springs. Psalm 84:6

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
