Dear friend,
It is a big food weekend here at Epiphany. As I was
reading over our bulletin insert of announcements for
this coming Sunday, I was struck by the correlation
between our current ministry and food. Food is
definitely a topic I am passionate about. I care about
all aspects of food, from start to finish, and I especially
love meals prepared with and shared among family,
friends and community. Sometimes I even enjoy
cleaning up after a meal. Apparently I'm in good
company here at Epiphany. There seem to be many
community members who are passionate about food,
food for ourselves and food our neighbors. Some are
even passionate about how the food choices we
make impact our neighbors.
This Sunday we are collecting food for our East
Providence neighbors to be given away at the Bread of
Life Food Pantry. Fair trade coffee beans are on sale
by a member of our Outreach Commission. The sale
of this coffee benefits neighbors who live far away.
The Simple Challenge activities for this weekend are
linked directly to food, especially the positive benefits
of choosing local foods from among the many options
available to us.
One member is giving away seeds, so that we can
begin thinking about and sprouting our food plants in
preparation for the upcoming gardening season.
Notice an invitation to participate in or donate to the
Good Friday Hunger Walk. Our Episcopal Charities
Speaker is coming to us from Farm Fresh Rhode
Island, an organization that promotes and supports
the local food system. Finally and most importantly,
there is an announcement welcoming all the baptized
to receive the bread and wine of Holy Communion.
Jesus cared about food too. On the evening before he
died he chose the sharing of a meal as the sign of his
presence. He told his friends to remember him and
his Covenant in this way. He gave the commandment
to love one another as he had loved them at this
meal. Throughout his ministry he fed people, often
abundantly and asked those who would follow him to
do the same. That might be where we get our
motivation. Come to Epiphany this weekend for
nourishment. Taste and See.
Faithfully,
Jennifer

| The Simple Challenge Lent 3: March 7 - 13 -- "'Tis the Season" |
| |
Over the course of Lent, we are cleaning out and de-
cluttering our material possessions as a
spiritual
discipline. This week we will be paying attention to
seasonal items such as costumes, interior and
exterior decorations, knick knacks, gift bags and
wraps and any other seasonal "ware". Often we
store
away treasures, pulling them out only once a year.
Many of these items have sentimental value, but then
again, much of it may not. Rather than storing things
that never actually get used or appreciated, maybe it is
time to share them with others.
Come up with a strategy for your de-cluttering so that
you experience gratitude for what you have and keep
AND experience generosity in giving away what you
can.
Save the items you wish to give away from this week
by labeling your box or bags "Seasonal" and set
them
aside until we call for them at church in April. If you
have items to recycle that will not go in your curbside
bins, go to Rhode Island Resource Recovery
Corporation at www.rirrc.org.
You may consider
offering items on "Jen's List"- see Jennifer's office
door for "in community" giving and receiving.
For your reflection and prayer this week:
"Do not
store
up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and
rust consume and where thieves break in and steal;
but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where
neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do
not break in and steal. For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also." Jesus, in the Gospel
according to Matthew 6:19-21
Interesting that Jesus said, "where your treasure is,
there your heart will be", rather than "where our heart
is we will find our treasure." Jesus is strongly
suggesting that if we want to change our hearts, (i.e.
repent) we should be very caring and careful with
where we put our treasure. As you are looking over
your seasonal and stored away treasures this week,
what do you find of most value? What items bring you
most joy and happy memories? What are you storing
that you might associate with a broken heart? Do you
have any desire to invest your treasure in a new way
so that your heart might be more open to others? To
God?
A Prayer - God of abundance, I spend my
money on
what is not bread, on that which does not satisfy me,
does not nourish others. I allow the maggots of
desire to multiply in my heart and lay waste the
resources you have given me. Strengthen in me the
hunger to live simply, and to know that, in you, I have
all I need. Amen. -from Prayers for Penitents, by
the
Rev'd Jennifer M. Phillips.
