Dear friend,
This Sundays Gospel is Lukes
version of the calling of the first disciples. It is a
familiar story, one that includes the miracle of the
overflowing nets. It strikes me as interesting and
vaguely familiar that Jesus catches the disciples in
the morning, cleaning up after long and fairly
unproductive night of work. I can just imagine how
Simon Peter might have felt when Jesus asked if he
could have a boat ride, and then when he asked him
to go out a little further and then when he asked him to
drop the nets. Weary, distracted and ready for some
rest, thats how I think Peter might have felt.
Sometimes discipleship is just like that. We are
called to move forward or move deeper when we really
just feel like a nap. How many times do we catch
ourselves saying, if only to ourselves, been there,
done that, or Im not capable or Im too busy or Ive
already given enough, or any of the other myriad
excuses we have for not following where Jesus
leads.
This miracle story reminds us that discipleship, at its
heart is about following Jesus forward into new and
abundant life, no matter what voices in us or from
outside are competing with Jesus call to us. The
timing is rarely convenient for following Jesus. We
may never feel quite up to the task. And yet, there he
is, again and again, pointing the way and asking us to
follow.
This week we will gather as a community for our
annual meeting on Sunday at Noon. At both services I
will give my annual report as an address to the
community. This is a significant day for us to look
back at the year that is past and to listen together for
where Jesus is calling us to follow in the future. We
have been through a lot in the last year. We have
worked, prayed, grown, tried some new things, had
some successes and some failures. We may be
tired, and yet we are called to go deeper and to
continue to follow. When Jesus is leading the way, the
catch is often much larger than we expect or imagine.
Be a part of this Sundays worship and meeting. This
is an invitation to go deeper and toss out your net.
Gone fishin',
Jennifer

Parenting in Faith

This Sunday begins the 3 week series, "Parenting
in Faith." This Adult Forum topic focuses on how we
welcome Christ into our homes
and the relationships we share in our families; how
we are nurtured in our faith as parents, how we
pray with our children and how we grow in Christ
as our children grow. Join Jennifer, February 7, 21 &
28 as she
explores these topics. Please note that you do not
have to be a parent to attend; experienced parents and
grandparents are welcome.

Take the Simple Challenge

Join the rector and her family in a community Lenten
journey. This challenge will involve action, reflection,
and relationship. We are invited to give up, take on,
and think about our role as stewards of God's
creation, our lives as consumers, and as followers of
Jesus Christ, our commitment to loving our neighbors
as ourselves.
The basics of the challenge:
During the season of Lent:
- Refrain from buying anything new. Logical
exceptions to this include food, medicine, fuel, and
products that are essential for caring for our bodies
and homes. When making purchases, as much as
possible, consider the impact particular goods have
on you, others and the environment.
- Week by week, we will be lead category by
category, in clearing
out the clutter of our homes, deciding to give
away, recycle or throw away the excess.
- Join us for Friday night films with themes of
abundance, sustainability and environmental
awareness. -- Movies for kids too!
- Field trips...that's right. We are going to visit a
couple of interesting local sights to inspire and
enlighten us. These will be on Saturday
mornings.
In the Season of Easter:
Join with others who have taken the challenge in
hosting a "great give away". Sharing our gently used
and useful things with those in need, followed by a
yard sale. All the proceeds can be sent to the relief
effort in Haiti.
More details will follow. For now, begin considering
the challenge.
