Dear friend,
This week's gospel reading
continues the story of Jesus in the temple, who
after reading the words of the prophet Isaiah
says, "today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
He does some explaining, some proclaiming, and
then a bit of story telling, but to no avail. The people
can neither hear nor accept that what he is saying is
good news, at least not for them.
How often does this happen to us? How often do
Jesus' words fall onto our own deaf ears?
I offer this "confession" written for the annual meeting
of the United Methodist Women's Caucus in 1976. It
may help open your ears, or your mind or your heart,
helping you to get ready for the word and Sacrament
we will share this Sunday. Listen up!
Peace,
Jennifer
"Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the
prophet's hometown." Luke 4:24
Confession
You asked for my hands
that
you could use them for your purpose.
I gave them for a moment
and
then withdrew for the work was hard. You
asked for my
mouth
to speak against injustice. I gave you a
whisper
that I might not be
accused. You
asked for my
eyes
to see the pain of
poverty. I
closed
them
for I did not want to
know. You asked for my
life
that you might work through me. I gave
you a fractional part
that I might not get involved. God, forgive me
for
calculated efforts to serve you
only
when it is convenient to do
so,
only in places where it is safe to do so.
Creator God, forgive me, renew
me,
and send me out as a usable instrument,
that
I may take seriously the meaning of Your Cross.

Take the Simple Challenge

Join the rector and her family in a community Lenten
journey. This challenge will involve action, reflection,
and relationship. We are invited to give up, take on,
and think about our role as stewards of God's
creation, our lives as consumers, and as followers of
Jesus Christ, our commitment to loving our neighbors
as ourselves.
The basics of the challenge:
During the season of Lent:
- 1) Refrain from buying anything new. Logical
exceptions to this include food, medicine, fuel, and
products that are essential for caring for our bodies
and homes. When making purchases, as much as
possible, consider the impact particular goods on you,
others and the environment.
- 2) Week by week, category by category, clear
out the clutter of your home, deciding to either give
away or throw away the excess.
In the Season of Easter:
Join with others who have taken the challenge in
hosting a "great give away". Sharing our gently used
and useful things with those in need, followed by a
yard sale. All the proceeds can be sent to the relief
effort in Haiti.
More details will follow. For now, begin considering
the challenge.
For a bit of food for thought, check out the video, "The
Story of Stuff" at www.storyofstuff
or during Coffee Hour on Sunday,
where it will be shown at one end of the parish
hall.

Meals to Members

As many of you may know and have possibly
benefitted from, the Meals to Members program is one
of the many ways the Pastoral Care Commission
ministers to the community members of Church of the
Epiphany. The act of bringing a meal to someone who
is ill, grieving, bed ridden etc. brings joy to both the
recipient and the giver. If you would like to offer your
gifts in this way, the Pastoral Care Commission would
welcome your contribution. Contact Gracelynn Rizzolo
at 401-728-2329 or ailuros11{at}verizon{dot}net.
