Advent Lessons & Carols

Join us this Sunday evening, December 13 at 7 p.m. for Advent Lessons & Carols. On this evening, people will come together to hear the story, in scripture and in song, leading up to the birth of Christ. There will be readers from various groups in the Church, the choir will sing several anthems and the congregation will sing hymns of the Advent season. Truly, this is one event you will not want to miss.

Dear Friend,

This Sunday, our church will be tinted with a shade of rose, and mark the Third Sunday in Advent for rejoicing. A special day really for exuberant praise. But the gospel reading hardly points to this, what with being called "broods of vipers etc.," by John. Well, maybe there's hope for us?

There is a phrase that has stuck with me through the week. "Bear fruit worthy of repentance." Think about it: This season we've been asked to think about, pray about, examine the ways in which we are preparing our hearts, our lives really, for the reign of God. We've been asked to think about the entirety of our lives in relationship to God and one another. It's one thing to acknowledge that we need to do things differently, perhaps change in order to proceed, but John is saying that any change in our lives that does not bear fruit that is worthy, is no real change at all.

There is great rejoicing in this! True repentance, true change, bears fruit. It is visible, tangible and real. It shows in the way we live and work in the world.

So a question to ask might be something like this: Are you experiencing this deep, transformative change of which John speaks? Or have you at this point only acknowledged the need for such a transformation? Either way, you'll be on the right track, according to John.

Tim

  • Be a shining star---
  • Be a shining star on our Church Family Christmas Tree. This year we would like each family in our community to be represented by a star on our Christmas tree. On Sundays in December the altar guild will have silver stars and paint pens available in the entrance of the church after each service. We would like each family to write their name and a brief message or prayer on a star that will be used to decorate our "Family Tree".
